Earlier today, the BCCI invited applications for the position of Head Coach for India’s Senior India Men’s Team post as Kumble’s tenure comes to an end on June 24. The BCCI made it clear that there will be no auto-extension for the veteran and will follow the same procedure as other applicants.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India have started the process of finding a new Head Coach by inviting applicants for the position for Virat Kohli and Co. as Anil Kumble’s contract comes to an end immediately after the Champions Trophy. Though India has had a brilliant record under Kumble with all five Test series won, it was not enough for him to get an auto-extension.

"The process has been initiated since the term of the current coach, Mr. Anil Kumble concludes with the Champions trophy. Present Head Coach, Mr. Anil Kumble will be a direct entry for the process." BCCI said in a media release.

Before the Indian Premier League, Kumble had put forth his view regarding the 150% fee hike for Grade A players in the Central Contract which, reportedly, made the BCCI ‘unhappy’. He also proposed a promotion of Sanjay Bangar as Assistant Coach and Zaheer Khan as fast-bowling coach and a 25% hike for Captain Virat Kohli due to his workload.

In the interview with Cricketnext, a senior BCCI official mentioned that seeking help from the Cricket Advisory Committee (COA) repeatedly is a possible reason for why he did not get an extension despite an excellent record.

“I don’t think he is headed in the right direction. We are not against people voicing their opinion. But yes, there is a way and a protocol that needs to be followed everywhere and it is no different here. You can always confide in people you trust. But to knock at the doors of people who are influential is setting a very wrong precedent, more so, when matters do not involve them. It is only right to speak to the Board when matters concern the day-to-day functioning of BCCI,” said the senior BCCI official.

Though Kumble gets a direct-entry in the contention for the role, he will have to go through the same procedure as all other applicants. The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (COA) will be the same as the one that selected Kumble for the role and once again will be instrumental in making the call. According to the official statement of the BCCI, the candidates are expected to send in their applications by May 31.

"To ensure a fair and completely transparent process, a nominee of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) will oversee the entire process along with the Cricket Advisory Committee," the statement added.

"The BCCI's three-member Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Mr. Sachin Tendulkar, Mr. Sourav Ganguly and Mr. VVS Laxman will conduct interviews and seek presentations to select the best possible candidate to guide the team and take Indian Cricket forward," said BCCI in their statement.

Did you know, Kumble holds the record of bowling 40850 balls in entire Test career, which is highest for an Indian and second highest overall.
