Injured Ishant Sharma in doubt for Afghanistan Test
Ishant Sharma has suffered an injury during his last match for his county side Sussex, which has raised concerns over his participation in the one-off Test match against Afghanistan. The announcement was made by county side itself, however, the nature and extent of the injury are still unknown.
This is the second time that Sharma has suffered an injury during his county stint with Sussex. On the first occasion, he suffered a shoulder injury while fielding in the deep during the match against Gloucestershire last month and had to give the next tie against Middlesex a miss. However, he returned in the next game and has been a consistent feature in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
However, right now, Sharma, who has scalped eight wickets in the ongoing List A tournament so far, was forced to miss the game against Essex once again due to the injury. The announcement was made by county side on its Twitter account but they did not mention the nature or extent of the injury. Given that there is just over a week left for the game against Afghanistan, the injury has come at a wrong time for the Indian pacer.
As per a report in the Indian Express, all the players have been asked to clear the yo-yo test before the Afghanistan game. Hence, Sharma would have to prove his fitness to feature in the Test match, which further stressed to the fact that India will have to bear the brunt of the veteran pacer's unavailability.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Varun Aaron are two other Indian players who are currently playing county cricket in England. Pujara, who had a below-par run in the first-class format, has played some good innings in the List A cricket. He has scored 345 runs from five innings so far at an average of 86.25. He might not play the two remaining games for Yorkshire as he would have to join Indian team camp in Bengaluru.
Aaron has had a mixed season in both the formats so far. The discarded India pacer took 12 wickets in three first-class matches while could only manage to take seven wickets from six games in the List A competition.
