Failures often teach you a lot, says Rishabh Pant
Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant believes that he can come back harder as failures have taught him a lot in his small career. He also expects things to change for Delhi Daredevils in this season as both coach Ricky Ponting and skipper Gautam Gambhir spread positive vibes and have a winning mindset.
Right from the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, the spotlight has been firmly on Rishabh Pant and he has been termed as MS Dhoni’s successor for about a year now. Although he was fairly consistent in domestic cricket, he has failed to do the same thing in the only 4 T20Is that he played and has struggled big-time. On debut, he batted only for 3 deliveries, but his real opportunity came in the West Indies when he batted at No. 3 and scored a sluggish 35-ball 38. In the recently concluded Nidahas Trophy, he scored 23 and 7 in the two games he played.
Despite modest returns, Pant is not too worried whatsoever. He had a good experience and interaction with head coach Ravi Shastri. The former India all-rounder is known for bringing the best out of the players and his tips and suggestions will certainly help Pant in the future.
“While returning from Sri Lanka, I had an interaction with Ravi Shastri. He told me to work on certain skills and I am trying to implement it in my game. The atmosphere in the Indian dressing room is fantastic. I
The Delhi franchise also roped in Ricky Ponting as the coach who has tasted success with the Mumbai Indians in the past. He has also coached the Australian T20 team and has been a great influence. Hence, his presence will help youngsters like Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and others or at least Pant thinks so.
“Ricky sir gives you a lot of positive vibes. He is someone who always wants to win and same with our skipper Gautam Gambhir. I am expecting that things will change this season,” the 21-year-old said.
Pant felt that the coaches can influence and change one’s mindset but it is on the player to give his 100%.
“The coaches can work on your mindset but it is the player, who has to give his hundred percent and execute it on the field,” he added.
Pant didn’t have the best of Ranji Trophy season this time around, but he made up for it with decent outings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Pant underlined the fact that whatever happens, you need to work hard.
“I was in a good frame of mind but these things happen. You get a good ball, sometimes get out down the leg-side. It’s part and parcel of the game but you need to keep working hard. I don’t think there will be desperation to perform for this reason. And about pressure, it’s always there irrespective of whether it is Ranji Trophy, IPL or India,” the wicket-keeper batsman added.
The 11th season of the IPL will begin on April 7, but Delhi Daredevils play their first game on April 8.
