Technology seeping into every cell of modern day cricket is not only good and shiny but also faulty and at times, confusing. And Grenada’s St. George stadium was the latest such example of it when Jason Holder’s crystal clear stump-out was shown as a “Not Out” on the big screen, by mistake.
Posting a mammoth target of 419 runs in 50 overs, England would have been more than assured of a win in the 4th ODI. Batting first, centuries by Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler had put the visitors on the driving seat and only a calamity in the second innings could see things going south for them.
Unfortunately, the agent of calamity was always there in the Windies side and on Wednesday, it decided to show up. Opening for the hosts, Chris Gayle ran off to a 97-ball-162 featuring eleven boundaries and fourteen sixes. By the time he got out, Windies needed an easy 120 runs off 90 balls with the likes of Jason Holder, Carlos Braithwaite, and Ashley Nurse yet to get out.
But, it was not to happen with the three falling one after another eventually falling short by 29 runs. However, the turning point was Holder’s wicket and he didn’t leave the ground without drama. Adil Rashid’s flighted delivery wide on the off saw the ball spinning away and Holder’s attempt to loft it over the cover was blank swing. However, Buttler was quick to whip off the bails in a flash and stump him.
Holder was late and the third umpire had realized in the very first attempt. However, after he had confirmed his decision, the big screen had mistakenly shown “Not Out”. Before it quickly corrected it to “Out”.
