Chris Gayle was dropped from the RCB playing 11 for last night’s encounter against Kings XI Punjab to make way for AB de Villiers. However, Binny has said that De Villiers’ return had left RCB with no other choice given that Shane Watson's position cannot be changed.

De Villiers marked his return to the team with an exceptional 89 not out from 46 balls with nine sixes and three fours. His pyrotechnics helped the visitors reach a decent position of 148 for 4 after losing four wickets for 68 in 13.1 overs. But Punjab’s well-rounded batting unit made sure that the target was never going to be enough.

Speaking of the changes for yesterday’s game, Binny said, “Shane Watson has batted in the top order for all his career, so there was no question of changing his position. We had no option but to drop Chris Gayle to make way for AB in the top order. It was not a tactical strategy but simply we had no other choice. As soon as AB de Villiers is fit he walks into RCB’s playing XI,” reported the Hindustan Times.

Billy Stanlake and Tymal Mills also featured for the RCB last night, and it remains to be seen what combination last season’s runners-up go with for their next game against Mumbai Indians on April 14th, given that Virat Kohli is also likely to return to the side.

As far as the reasons for their last defeat is concerned, Binny believes that their side did not have enough runs to defend. The all-rounder said, “We did not put enough runs on board. When you are batting first, 148 runs is not a good score. In T20, the start is very important. If you are two down in the first four overs, then rest of the team struggles.” He also said that the wicket was a bit two-paced in the first innings and thus difficult to bat on. “When we batted in the first innings, the wicket was a bit two-paced. The ball that was bowled cross seam, held in to the surface a bit. It was that kind of wicket, where you need 15-20 balls to get to read the pace of the pitch.”

Binny also cited Bangalore’s inability to take early wickets as another reason for their loss, saying, “When you have a low total to defend, it’s crucial to take at least two wickets in the power-plays. We could not do that against KXIP.”
