Former Sri Lankan legend Aravinda de Silva has stated that Virat Kohli’s arrogance and his confidence in leading the side are his best qualities on the field. Moreover, the 51-year-old ex-skipper also believes that the Indian skipper has it in him to take Indian cricket to a different level.

The topic of Virat Kohli is one that divides the cricketing world into two parts. While there is no denying the class of the Indian skipper as a batsman, his on-field persona is something that divides opinion like no other. While some people love Kohli for his aggression and on the field, some others find it a bit too over the top.

However, De Silva is clearly a fan of the way Kohli approaches the game as he revealed what he finds most attractive about the 28-year-old’s game. “It's the way he approaches his game, and also his arrogance and confidence. I think he reminds me a lot of some of the past greats like Viv (Richards). The way he took on the mighty Australians in Australia was something very special. Like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and then Sachin Tendulkar, who all changed the complexion of Indian cricket, Kohli has it in him to take Indian cricket to a different level”, TOI quoted De Silva as saying.

Kohli led India to their eighth consecutive test series win after India won the second Test to lead the three match series 2-0. While this does justify India’s current status as the number one team in Test cricket, it does not bode well for the home side as this series loss comes hot on the heels of their first ever ODI series loss to Zimbabwe. And the former Lankan skipper voiced his concerns on the situation, saying, “Well, it is very sad to see our team not winning but I think we need to seriously sit down and formulate a plan so as to take cricket in the right direction. We need to have a long-term plan.”

Further, as far as what Sri Lanka’s cricket administration could do to stop their ongoing freefall, De Silva had this to say, “They need to give these guys confidence. You cannot entertain chopping and changing too much after every series loss. We must give them a decent run and groom players that have potential for the future. Giving them confidence is very important which is lacking at the moment.”
