Kohli will be made to understand the role of the coach, says BCCI secretary
BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary has clarified that the CAC will meet Virat Kohli before naming the new Indian coach, only to make the Indian skipper understand the role of the coach. Meanwhile, an unnamed board official said that only the CAC knows the name of the next coach as of now.
While most were expecting the new Indian coach to be revealed yesterday, the BCCI appointed Cricket Advisory Committee delayed the decision saying that they wanted to meet Kohli before naming the new coach. This has led to widespread speculation that the Indian skipper was dominating the coach selection process.
However, BCCI secretary Amitabh Chaudhary has addressed the speculation saying that, the CAC would only make the India skipper "understand" the role of the coach in the Indian team.
"Sachin (Tendulkar) was (there) through Skype and Sourav (Ganguly and VVS (Laxman) were there. And I was actually touched
"Every professional can have a certain style. So the other stakeholders are made to understand that the style is typical of person and therefore we should become accommodative if that. So it was only with this intent that the three greats decided to announce it (the name of the coach) later," he added.
Ever since Anil Kumble’s resignation from the post on June 20 owing to his ‘untenable’ equation with Kohli, the Indian coach’s seat has been vacant and both the BCCI as well as the CAC have given a lot of importance to the Indian skipper’s preference for the next coach, with BCCI CEO
While it has been learnt that the CAC interviewed only 6 people for the coach’s post, it has also been learnt that Ravi Shastri and Virender Sehwag are favourites for the post. While Kohli prefers Shastri owing to his previous experience of working with the former team India director, Sehwag apparently has the backing of Chaudhary and has played with the majority of the current Indian squad, as he mentioned in his CV for the post.
Meanwhile, a top board official told TOI, "Kohli will be told that we have interviewed five people and found
The source, however, said that only the CAC knows the name of the new coach. "They have made the choice. We don't know what that choice is because only the three of them (of CAC) were involved in that discussion when that choice was made, and no other board official was a part of it."
