India vs England | Virat Kohli leaps back to No.1 position in Test rankings
Virat Kohli has leaped back to the top of the ICC Test rankings ahead of Steven Smith for the second time this year as he scored 103 and 97 across two innings against England at Trent Bridge. Hardik Pandya was another Indian to move up the ladder as he jumped 27 places on the all-rounders’ list.
A spirited Indian team recorded a more than convincing victory at Trent Bridge in the third Test match against England as they beat the latter by 203 runs to bounce back in the five-match series which is now at 2-1. They had their skipper Virat Kohli to thank for that, as the 29-year old recorded scores of 103 and 97 against Joe Root & Co to be the main architect of the victory.
As a result of which, Kohli leapt over banned Australian captain - Steven Smith to regain the title of top-ranked Test batsman in the world in the recent ICC Test rankings for batsmen. Kohli had earlier let go of the spot to Steven Smith after a less-than-average outing at Lord's in the second Test, where he managed scores of 23 and 17 in their embarrassing loss.
Kohli has 937 rating points, which is a new career-best for him and is only a point away from breaking into the top ten on the all-time points list. The current top ten are Don Bradman (961 points), Steven Smith (947), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (both on 942), Peter May (941), and Gary Sobers, Clyde Walcott, Vivian Richards and Kumar Sangakkara (all on 938 points).
