MS Dhoni was on the cusp of taking Chennai Super Kings over the line when he hit Umesh Yadav for 24 runs on the first five deliveries of the final over, but the last ball run-out ensured that the game ended in RCB’s favour. Deepak Chahar was one of the positives for the Chennai-based franchise.

Shane Watson (1.5/10): A simple look at Shane Watson’s glorious career points to the fact that he never had problems against the away moving deliveries, but ever since the 2019 IPL started, he surprisingly became vulnerable against it, and tonight was no different. With Dale Steyn bowling as good as he has ever been, Watson was little tentative and edged the away-swinger to Marcus Stoinis. A five-run innings doesn’t even command a couple of points.

Faf du Plessis (3.5/10): I will come to his batting latter, let me talk about his amazing fielding first. Faf du Plessis is always known as one of the finest fielders in the CSK side, and he showed that by taking as many as three brilliant catches tonight. That said, his batting was far from the mark and he huffed and puffed his way to a struggling 5 of 15 balls. On a whole, du Plessis’ efforts do not demand more than three and a half.

Suresh Raina (2/10): Coches will show this video to their wards over and over again when teaching seam presentation. With an upright seam, Steyn made a slight change to his angle on the very last moment and bowled Suresh Raina for a golden duck. Raina’s mistake, however, lied with the fact that he exposed himself much before Steyn bowled the delivery, giving the South African an idea of targeting with a yorker.

Ambati Rayudu (4/10): If Rayudu keeps on batting like this, then the section of public who sympathised with him after his World Cup snub may probably turn their head in the other direction. Sure enough, he got a start and was on the right direction to pull off a coup against RCB, but by letting a Yuzvendra Chahal delivery through the gate, he put his team in danger yet again.

Kedar Jadhav (3/10): Well, the singular storyline is often the more dangerous one. CSK understood that in the hardest way possible against Sunrisers Hyderabad last week and Kedar Jadhav did a little to make a change to that against RCB. When patience should have been the order of the day, Jadhav top-edged a delivery to be dismissed for 9. Not the kind of innings the franchise would’ve wanted from him.

MS Dhoni (9.5/10): Fair play to MS Dhoni for the way he scored 24 runs in the last over and most importantly, he had the faith that the game was within reach in the 19th over. This needs a special kind of talent and belief in one’s ability, and over the years, MS Dhoni showed that he had them in plenty. Notwithstanding the result, his innings is deserving of the highest praise.

Dwayne Bravo (6/10): The Carribean may not be the most fearsome bowler in the CSK line-up, but from the years of experience, he bowls with panache and with a lot of trust in his own ability. He kept on unleashing the slower balls one after another while sending Parthiv Patel and Moeen Ali back to the hut. With the bat, he left a lot to be desired and should work on that aspect sooner than later.

Ravindra Jadeja (7.5/10): For a change, Ravindra Jadeja dethroned Imran Tahir to be the team’s prime spinner for the night, all thanks to his intelligent usage of variations. Knowing that AB de Villiers will trying to get off the block quickly, he imparted as much turn as he could which eventually resulted in ABD’s as well as Akshdeep Nath’s dismissal. It was a classic spinner’s delight and Sir Jadeja wouldn’t mind it even one per cent. Had it not been the silly run-out dismissal, I would’ve made Jadeja a star on this chart. But then again, Jadeja has this habit of messing things up.

Deepak Chahar (8/10): Deepak Chahar is the epitome of the fact that if a captain marshalls his troupe well, then the product will definitely be better. With an uncluttered mind and the task of doing one particular job, Chahar enured that Shardul Thakur’s bad performance slipped under the carpet eventually. Chahar’s only over in the death cost nine runs which goes on to show that the Rajasthan pacer is beyond the reputation of a one-dimensional pacer now.

Shardul Thakur (1.5/10): While Deepak Chahar was restricting the run-flow from one end, Thakur let that momentum slip from CSK’s hands by offering few balls on the pads while bowling from the Cubbon Park end. The direction of the wind didn’t help his cause either as only occasional deliveries were coming in and the lack of pace meant it was dispatched regularly - both in front and behind the square.

Imran Tahir(5/10): Fun Fact, if at all it is funny, - Imran Tahir gave away more than 30 for the first time in 10 matches this season. Let that sink in first and we will then discuss his bowling tonight. It was a classic ebb and flow as Tahir kept the tight length to trouble Akshdeep Nath and Parthiv Patel, before losing the sting in the second over. He did manage to restore sanity in the last two overs, and by dismissing Marcus Stoinis, Tahir ensured that he did his part.
