RCB vs MI | Rating Mumbai Indians’ performance after thrilling win in Bangalore run-feast

Due to the bad umpiring at the end, Royal Challengers Bangalore were denied their first win in the tournament and Mumbai ended up on the right side of the result. While Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were brilliant for the hosts, the same couldn’t be said about their bowlers, who cost them the game.

Rohit Sharma (8/10): The Mumbai skipper would be happy with his effort, especially for the way he accelerated in the powerplay. With RCB taking too much of time to bring on Yuzvendra Chahal to bowl against him, probably keeping a left-hander Quinton de Kock’s presence in mind, Rohit took it head on and didn’t waste any time. A very intelligent innings and an effective one too.

Quinton de Kock (4/10): QDK’s Bangalore return didn’t have those regular fireworks that have characterised his batting for South Africa and was very fragile from the beginning. An easy catch was dropped by Colin de Grandhomme, but still he couldn’t manage to have a good day with the bat.

Suryakumar Yadav (7/10): Terrible way to get out, but played a decent innings after QDK’s dismissal. With Rohit having some trouble against the leg-spin, Yadav should have accelerated a bit early instead of waiting for Yuvraj Singh’s arrival to the crease. Still, it would be unfair to treat him so harshly considering the entire lower-order failed with the bat.

Yuvraj Singh (8.5/10): For those three consecutive sixes and attempting one on the fourth one, I can give Yuvraj as much as I want and I don’t think anyone will have a problem with that. Roll the clock back like that Yuvi. After all, IPL is the representation of the changing ambitions of Indian cricket and a celebration of Indian cricket and its cricketers.

Kieron Pollard (2/10): Mumbai needed him to step up after the top-order gave the base to capitalise on, but the burly West Indian failed in the pursuit, accounting for a mere five off six balls. No defense for him as he was not judging the length perfectly.

Hardik Pandya (8/10): Forget everything, and hail the incredible six-hitting genius of Hardik Pandya. After Mumbai lost the middle-over exchange with the bat, the junior Pandya restored parity with an exhibition of clean-hitting to guide the team to 187 - the average first innings score at the venue in the last IPL. His bowling performance means that I have to take off one point from there.

Krunal Pandya (5/10): One of the most valued and impactful cricketers in the side, Krunal Pandya didn’t have a good day today. Failed with the bat, scoring only one run, and couldn’t pick up a wicket either. But his economy rate of 7 rpo was not bad at the Chinnaswamy and we can cut him some slack for that alone.

Mitchell McClenaghan (2/10): Got only a couple of overs to bowl and in that, AB found one of the best phases in the game and took him to the cleaners. Good for him that the team won and he might miss the scathing only because of that.

Lasith Malinga (5/10): Malinga boarded a late flight to India after so much of deliberations but the match turned out to be a disaster for him after Virat Kohli and AB de Villers smashed him to all corners of the ground. However, he showed why Mumbai got him back this year with a huge last over where he stopped a free flowing AB and won MI the game.

Mayank Markande (5.5/10): The Punjab leg-spinner was on the bench in the season opener as Mumbai decided to go with Rasikh Salam Dar, but upon his comeback, he made an instant impact by taking down Parthiv Patel’s stumps. Not a bad day out definitely and he will just try to add more variations to his arsenal in the next match.

Jasprit Bumrah (9.5/10): If there is one bowler who can demand the IPL salary of a batsman, it has to be Jasprit Bumrah. Defending 22 runs in the penultimate over, he gave away just 5 runs to put the pressure back on the Bangalore side. Best bowler in the world. PERIOD.
