IND vs SA | Rishabh Pant should be treated like any other young player, states Dean Jones
Dean Jones has said that Rishabh Pant does not deserve to be treated in a manner softer than the other prospects and it’s time he learnt from his mistakes to keep playing regularly. Earlier, Yuvraj Singh had stated that Pant’s mindset should be understood and he should be dealt with accordingly.
Ever since Rishabh Pant has shot into the spotlight as a regular for India across all the three formats of the game, he has received considerable flak for not being able to match expectations. Having phenomenal domestic numbers for a 21-year-old, the wicket keeper’s international performances have been a major let down.
Hence, it has been a raging debate on whether the selectors should have patience with him or should he be asked to polish his game before returning to the international arena. After Yuvraj Singh advocated the former a while back, Dean Jones weighed in with his strong opinion on the matter.
“Why should Pant be any different to any other young player that has made mistakes? It’s big boys cricket. I know he is young, but he needs to learn some home truths and improve his off- side play!,” tweeted Jones, reported Hindustan Times.
Previously, Yuvraj had asked the people involved in interacting with Pant to try to gauge his way of thinking and adapt their teaching methods to the same, which has invoked Jones’ views on the matter.
“How they get the best out of Pant is completely based on his character. You have to understand his psychology and then work with that. If you are going to suppress him, you won’t get the best out of him. Yes, he has been given a number of chances but how do you get the best out of him. The people monitoring him in the team -- the coaches, the captain -- can make a lot of difference,” he had said.
