VIDEO | Williamson stops Daryl Mitchell from walking off after third umpire signals OUT despite HotSpot mark

Kane Williamson was awarded the “ICC Spirit of the Cricket” award and is the last person in a match to object an umpiring decision. However, such was the absurdity of the decision that Kane Williamson asked his partner Daryl Mitchell not to walk off as the HotSpot had shown a mark on the bat.

Let’s not waste any time and directly get into what happened at Eden Park in Auckland. It was a real drama. Krunal Pandya pushed the last ball of the sixth over with an angle which caught Mitchell dead in his tracks when he was rocking back. He was not at all in the right position as the bat came down hurriedly when he tried to jab it. As the ball hit him on the pads, MS Dhoni loudly appealed for it and the umpire didn’t hesitate to raise his finger as well.

However, it caught Mitchell by surprise who thought the ball had touched his bat before hitting him on the pads and he decided to opt for DRS. When the third umpire checked the replay, there was a clear spot on the HotSpot but when the umpire further went on to check the RTS, no spike was visible when the ball went past the bat. It was quite surprising given ICC had always claimed that despite the technology not being 100% perfect, RTS is always in sync with HotSpot, relatively. In Auckland, it was clearly not the case.

Third umpire Shaun Haig, after seeing both HotSpot and RTS, decided to side with the latter and stayed with the on-field umpire’s decision. Kane Williamson was completely taken aback while Simon Doull, on commentary, echoed the Kiwi skipper’s sentiment. Williamson was in a shock and he asked Mitchell to stay back which then caught Rohit Sharma by surprise. The stand-in Indian skipper and MS Dhoni discussed with the umpire and Mitchell for some time before the official asked Mitchell to go back.
