Virat Kohli surpasses Brian Lara in all-time ICC Test Rankings

Virat Kohli has moved ahead of Brian Lara in the all-time ICC Rankings for Test batsmen thanks to his recent performance in the Johannesburg Test against South Africa. In the latest Test rankings, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Jasprit Bumrah have achieved career-high rankings.

Ahead of the start of the third Test of the India-South Africa series, Kohli had 900 points and after playing 54-run and 41-run knocks, which helped the visitors to win the final Test by 63 runs, the Indian skipper earned 12 points. With 912 points, Kohli reached 26th position on the 31-batsman list where Sir Don Bradman holds the top spot with 961 points. In the all-time list of batsmen, Kohli moves ahead Lara (911), Kevin Pietersen (909), Hashim Amla (907), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (901) and Michael Clarke (900).

Kohli’s Australian counterpart Steve Smith, who leads the current ICC Test rankings, is second on the all-time list with 947 points. Next up for Kohli is Sunil Gavaskar next who has 916 points and the Indian batsmen looking to gain that points either in the only Test against Afghanistan in June or during the five-match Test series against England in August.

After the Johannesburg Test Hashim Amla benefited by one position and reached seventh, Dean Elgar reached 12th after gaining two places and Ajinkya Rahane managed to improve his position by five places and now he is at the 18th spot. 

In the latest Test bowlers rankings, top five players managed to hold their position as James Anderson continued to lead the pack followed by Kagiso Rabada and Ravindra Jadeja. Josh Hazelwood and Ravichandran Ashwin completed the top-5 in the rankings.

South African pacer Morne Morkel moved up two places and reached the 9th spot. In the recently concluded series, the Indian pacers performed brilliantly which also helped them in improving their rankings as Shami earned two points and reached career-best 15th position. Bhuvneshwar (20th) entered in the top-20 for the first time in his career and Ishant Sharma benefited with three places and now he is in 26th position. Bumrah, who visited South Africa for his first-ever Test series, is on a career-high 46th position.

The all-rounders’ ranking list is still led by Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. After the end of the three-match Test series in the Rainbow nation, Bhuvneshwar and Shami also improved their rankings as the former joined Rabada in 12th position and Shami gained ten spot hike to reached on 17th position.
