Match predictions:

1) Will any batsman score a hundred on Day 1?

There have been a total of two centurions on Day 1 of the last 3 Tests at this venue. But interestingly, the last time these 2 sides met each other, there were no centurions on Day 1. A very tricky question indeed, a lot might depend on the pitch. But seeing that pitches in England have been a bit batting friendly in recent times, we predict that YES, there will be a centurion on Day 1.

Prediction - Yes

2) How many aggregate runs will be scored on Day 1?

328 runs have been scored on an avg, on Day 1 of the last 3 Tests at this venue. Also, 308 runs were scored on Day 1 of these teams' last H2H meeting at this venue. With both teams having very strong batting line ups, we predict that 300 or more runs will be scored on Day 1.

Prediction - 300 or more

3) Will the team batting first be bowled out on Day 1?

The team batting first have been bowled out twice on Day 1 in the last 3 matches at this venue. But interestingly, when these two sides last met here, England lost just 4 wkts on Day 1.  With the match being first one of this Test series, we can expect both sides to be a bit conservative. Hence we feel that the team batting first will not be bowled out on Day 1.

Prediction - No

4) Will any opener of the team batting first score 50 or more runs on Day 1?

In the last 3 Tests at this venue, two times an opener from the team batting first scored 50 or more runs on Day 1.  However, when these two sides last met here, both the openers were dismissed cheaply.  But looking at the line-ups, with Cook, Dhawan, Vijay & Jennings being the 4 openers, the stats look more favorble towards the openers. Jennings has already scored a hundred against India, Cook is always solid & with Vijay having had a good tour of England the last time around, we predict an opener to score 50 or more runs on Day 1.

Prediction - Yes

5) How many batsmen will score 70 or more runs on Day 4?

In the last 3 Tests at this venue, just 2 batsmen scored 70 or more runs on Day 1. Plus, in the last H2H match at this venue, just 1 batsmen managed to score 70 or more runs.  With the match being Day 1 of a long series, it might actualy take time for the batsmen to get adjusted to the conditions. So we predict not more than 1 batsman will score 70 or more runs on Day 4.

Prediction - 1 or less

6) How many runs will the team batting first add for the 2nd wicket on Day 1?

The team batting first had added an avg of just 19 runs for the 2nd wkt on Day 1 of the last 3 Tests at this venue. But the last time these two sides faced each other, the team batting first added 51 runs for the 2nd wicket. All eyes would be on either Pujara or Root, who would need to stabilize things and build up a partnership with one of the openers, in case a wicket falls. We predict the outcome to be less than 50, given we're relatively new in the series.

Prediction - Less than 50

7) Will any bowler pick 5 or more wickets on Day 1?

2 bowlers grabbed 5-wkt hauls in the last 3 matches. But when these sides met here the last time around, there were no 5-wkt hauls on Day 1.  In recent times, we've seen Ishant & Bhuvi do well in English conditions, and as always, Anderson & Broad are in the reckoning for ENG.  But we feel it'll be a big ask for any bowler to deliver a 5-wkt haul in the 1st Day of the series, and hence we predict no 5-wkt hauls on Day 1.

Prediction - No

8) Will any spinner pick a wicket on Day 1?

Just 1 wicket has been picked by spinners on Day 1 in the last 3 matches at this Venue. Also, spinners took no wkts on Day 1 when these two sides met here last. With England recalling Rashid & Moeen,  and India contemplating the idea of bringing in Kuldeep, it will be very interesting to see how threatening the spinners would be. The pitch will indeed provide a bit of assistance, and with both teams well equipped with spinners, we predict spinners to take wickets on Day 1.

Prediction - Yes

9) How many maidens will be bowled on Day 1?

An avg of 15 maidens have been bowled on Day 1 of the last 3 matches at this venue. Also, 13 maidens were bowled on Day 1 when these two sides last met at this venue. With both sides having incredibly skillful pacers who can swing the ball & spinners who can keep things tight, we predict that 14 or more maidens will be bowled on Day 1.

Prediction - 14 or more

10) Will any batsman hit a six on Day 1?

 ©

Interestingly, no sixes were hit on Day 1 of the last 3 matches at this venue. But 2 sixes were hit on Day 1 of their last H2H encounter here. A lot might depend on India batting first, as Vijay & Dhawan would love to take the English spinners on.  We predict a six to be hit on Day 1.

Prediction - Yes

11) How many extras will be conceded on Day 1?

11 extras were bowled on avg on Day 1 of the last 3 matches at this venue. However, when these two sides last met each other here, 18 extras were bowled on Day 1.  But with both sides having a very disciplined bowling attack, we predict that less than 15 extras will be bowled on Day 1.

Prediction - Less than 15

12) How many fours will the team batting first hit on Day 1?

 ©

The team batting first had hit an avg of 39 fours on Day 1 of the last 3 matches at this venue. But when these sides last met each other at this venue, just 32 fours were hit on Day 1.  But looking at the squads, both sides have batsmen who can take the game away from the opposition once they get into their flow. Also, we might also see a lot of outside edges flying past the slip cordon & going to the boundary. Hence, we predict 35 or more fours to be hit on Day 1.

Prediction - 35 or more
