IND vs WI | The more I play, easier it is to switch formats, admits Mayank Agarwal

Having cemented his place in India's Test squad, opener Mayank Agarwal says it is easy to switch formats the more matches he plays at the international level. Agarwal has been picked to replace the injured Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian team for the three-match ODI series against West Indies.

Since making his Test debut in place of the injured Prithvi Shaw last year, Agarwal has impressed with every innings he has played, with his full-fledged performances coming in the recent home-stretch against South Africa and Bangladesh. However, with Dhawan’s recurring injuries and drop in form, the next step for Agarwal is to make his case for the ODI opening slot.

"The more I play like this, the better it is for me as a cricketer because I rather play cricket than not play cricket. When it comes to mindset (switching formats), the basics remain the same. It's easy to switch formats if your game plan is clear and your understanding of the game is clear," Agarwal said on BCCI’s 'Chahal TV', reported PTI.

With an average of 50 in List-A cricket, Agarwal has 3869 runs on board with a high score of 176. Given that Agarwal started his career in the limited-overs format before making the switch to First-class, combined with his numbers, makes him the best suitable replacement for the injured Dhawan.

"I want to win each and every match, each and every tournament. When you come in with that attitude, your mindset will be good. There's no guarantee that you'll get the results 100 per cent but you will be giving yourselves a good chance to perform," he said.

Agarwal further emphasized his desire to become an asset in accordance with the team’s needs.

"Regardless of wherever I play, I always think about how I can become an asset to my team and how I can contribute to the team. Even if I don't score runs with the bat, I think about contributing on the field, bringing in more energy on the field," Agarwal added.
