India vs Australia | Virat Kohli’s attitude rubs off on youngsters watching the game, believes Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri has stated that Indian skipper Virat Kohli has an 'in-your-face attitude' which rubs off on the youngsters who watch him play. The Indian team ended a Test series victory drought in Australia after they won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 after the final Test was declared as a draw.
India won a Test series in Australia 2-1 for the first time ever. In fact, it is also for the first time an Asian team has won a Test series in Australia. Though India had enforced a follow-on in the final match of the series, they could not win the encounter due to rain playing the spoilsport.
“He (Kohli) is very expressive, which is different to others. He is someone who is-in-your-face and it rubs off on youngsters watching the game.
“His teammates want to emulate him. So when an individual puts his neck on the line as captain, then the others follow. And you have seen that transition happening over the last two-three years where guys in the team have become more and more confident, about their own ability and the ability of the team as well. It has made all the difference” Shashtri said to TOI.
An all-around performance by the Indian team led by the classy Cheteshwar Pujara in the batting front and Jasprit Bumrah on the bowling front gave India the series victory. The team also had a good balance of youth and experience which aided in a better performance.
“This is not a team of gods or demigods, seniors or juniors. This is an Indian cricket team that will readily jump off a cliff to win a match for the country. That’s the mindset with which this team went into the series.”
The last match was a memorable one for spinner Kuldeep Yadav too who picked a five-wicket haul in the match. In the last year or so the Indian Test team has seen many new faces in Jasprit Bumrah, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant, Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw and Kuldeep Yadav. Saying that Indian coach expressed, if Yadav keeps performing in a similar fashion then he will be able to carve a permanent spot for himself in the Indian Test team.
“As many as six players have broken through the ranks. You don’t see that many coming through in a year in an established team that is ranked No. 1. We have given them the opportunities, it’s up to the players to grab them.
“If he can deliver like that (in Sydney) there could be a permanent place for him in in the team, irrespective of whether we are playing at home overseas,” Shastri said.
