ICC World Cup 2019 | England’s predicted XI for tricky Bangladesh clash
After a disappointing result against Pakistan last time out, hosts’ England will be eager to bounce back in their next World Cup tie against a determined Bangladesh outfit. The three lions will go up against Mashrafe Mortaza-led Bangladesh at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Saturday.
Openers
Jason Roy: Jason Roy had a good opening game against South Africa for England but was dismissed after facing just seven deliveries against Pakistan as the home team suffered a 14-run loss on Monday. Roy will hope to put that memory behind against a tricky Bangladesh side as the face-off on Saturday.
Jonny Bairstow(wk): On the back of brilliant IPL season, Bairstow has 32 runs from two games at the ongoing World Cup as he was dismissed for a duck in the opening match against South Africa. The talented wicket-keeper cum batsman will hope to improve upon that and do his SR of 106.93 some justice in the crucial test against Bangladesh.
Middle-order
Joe Root: 28-year old Joe Root scored a hard-fought 107 off 104 deliveries against Pakistan but that wasn’t enough as England fell short of the target by 14 runs earlier this week. He will be a key batsman in the middle overs if England aim to cross the 100-run mark against their Asian counterparts.
Eoin Morgan (C): Morgan could only manage nine-runs against Pakistan and will be disappointed that he could not see his side through to a win as they lost by a narrow margin. Morgan’s healthy average of close to 40 will give the English fans some confidence heading into tomorrow’s game.
Jos Buttler: Buttler was at his destructive best against Pakistan scoring a blistering 76-ball 103 but was unable to see his side through before being dismissed by pacer Mohammad Amir. Playing the role of a finisher, Buttler’s performance at the death will add to England’s total in Cardiff.
All-rounders
Ben Stokes: Stokes was the star with the bat in the opening day win against Faf du Plessis & Co. but failed to repeat the same heroics in the recent loss to Pakistan. The towering all-rounder will hope to rise to his best against the likes of Mustafizur Rahman and Mashrafe Mortaza on Saturday.
Moeen Ali: The setup against Pakistan was the perfect occasion for Moeen Ali to truly seal his spot and convince the English fans that he was more than capable of playing the big shots on the international stage. Ali could only manage to add 19 runs to the board before being dismissed by Wahab Riaz and will hope to make the most if given a chance against Bangladesh.
Chris Woakes: Woakes walked onto the pitch in at a tough moment for the home side in Monday’s game but scored a fast pace 21 to give the three lions some hope. However, the 30-year old bowling all-rounder was caught by Wahab Riaz off an Amir delivery to end the English challenge. He will hope to see his side through in the match against Bangladesh at Sophia Gardens.
Spinner
Adil Rashid: The 31-year old spinner had a quiet outing against Pakistan having ended the game with figures of 0/43 from five overs. Rashid, who has a tally of 133 wickets from 89 ODIs, will back himself to improve on that display in tomorrow’s game.
Pacers
Jofra Archer: 24-year old Jofra Archer had an outstanding World Cup debut in the game against South Africa on June 1. But he failed to repeat the same performance against England, as he ended the game without any wickets and was expensive with the ball as well. The youngster will back himself to shine if given the chance to do so against the likes of Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and others.
Mark Wood: Wood missed the opening match against South Africa due to an injury scare but returned to the starting line-up against Pakistan at the start of the week. Wood picked up two wickets from that game including that of the in-form Mohammad Hafeez at a crucial stage in the game. He is expected to hold onto his spot ahead of tomorrow’s match and will hope to do well against Bangladesh.
