Hyderabad could host the Badminton Asia Team Championship scheduled to be held between February 15 and 21 next year. The Times of India reported on Tuesday that officials of the Badminton Asia Confederation will be travelling to Hyderabad to inspect the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium facility on October 26 and 27.

The event will draw heavyweights in the global game as it carries more points than Superseries events that could add much valued points in the final sprint towards a Rio Olympic quota. With 13 of the top 15 players in the world in both men’s and women’s singles from Asia, the championship is seen as a curtain-raiser to the badminton event at the Rio Olympics.

The likes of China’s world number one Chen Long and world number three Lin Dan and the Chinese contingent including Li Xuerui, Shixian Wang and Wang Yihan will be out to prove their supremacy in the continental competition.

It will be a perfect canvas for India to display its growing stature as a force to reckon with in the global game with the likes of women’s world number one Saina Nehwal and world number 13 PV Sindhu combining with the might of men’s world number five Kidambi Srikanth and world number eight P Kashyap among others.

The Gachibowli Indoor Stadium hosted the World Badminton Championships in 2009.
