Olympics is over for me: Parupalli Kashyap

Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap’s Olympic dream is over thanks to an impending knee surgery that is likely to keep the Hyderabad player out until early June. In Kashyap’s absence, 23-year old Kidambi Srikanth would be India’s torchbearer in men’s badminton at the Rio Games in August.

Kashyap’s preparations for the Olympics were marred by several injuries, which have derailed the momentum the 29-year old had gained after beating world champion Chen Long last year.

"Olympics is over for me. My dream of winning an Olympic medal is shattered. But injuries or not in mind, I cannot forget the support that Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) is offering. They have done a lot and are doing for me," said Kashyap, who twisted his knee during the German Open in March. "The first doctor said that the injury was not serious but on second diagnosis we came to know that the extent of the injury was severe. I have no chance now and I can only wish best of luck for my teammates," a dejected Kashyap told Times of India.

Kashyap is currently ranked no. 20 in the world, and with the Olympic deadline of May 5, his chances of making the cut have all but evaporated. In his absence, Kidambi Srikanth is likely to be India’s only representative at the Olympics.

Srikanth is currently ranked no. 13 in the world, and with only two tournaments(China masters and Asia Championships) left to play before the May 5 deadline, he is expected to remain in the top 16 and thus make it to Rio. After his first round exit at the Singapore Open last week, the Hyderabad shuttler would be hoping to go the distance when the China masters begin in Jiangsu on Tuesday.
