PV Sindhu has looked back at the 2016 season with satisfaction, but felt it was important for her supporters to be realistic about their expectations post-Rio. She also said beating Carolina Marin in the World Superseries Finals in Dubai meant a lot after losing to the Spaniard in the Olympic final.

“At the end of this year I can say that 2016 went really well for me. But I am not going to rest on my laurels because I have so much more to achieve. I am taking it step by step. Next year there are so many tournaments to play and I want to win as many trophies as I can. I have especially set my sights on the all-England and the World Championships. Let's see what the future has in store for me,” Sindhu was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

“After Rio everyone has started expecting me to win everything and I am always under scrutiny. Life has changed for me and with it responsibilities have increased too. To be fair even I have started expecting more from myself. But we have to be practical and I cannot put too much pressure on myself. I was eager to come back and win again after Rio. It was very important for me and so I am happy that I won a Superseries (title) after Olympics and I look to win more titles in the years to come.”

On her battles with Marin, she said: “Defeat in a final of Olympics cannot be avenged. That moment is now a thing of the past. But for me personally, defeating Marin in Dubai meant a lot because I had analysed every bit from Rio and I wanted to set it right.”

Sindhu is constantly working on getting better.

“There is still a long way to go and that is motivating enough. After you win a tournament you just look to go ahead with the confidence and improve your performance. I always train harder and never lose my sleep over poor performances in the previous tournaments. All your opponents now know your game even before you step out on court so it is important that we change our game accordingly to keep that element of surprise alive.”

About the upcoming PBL season, she said: “I am confident that Chennai Smashers will perform much better this time. We have a very good team with all the top players.

“The change of format this time will be interesting. It is an 11-point scoring system and it will be new to all of us. When it is 21 points, we have time to recover if we concede the lead but here we will hardly have time to make up. We have to be alert from the start itself.”
