German Open: Sindhu enters quarters; Kashyap, Srikanth crash out
World No.12 P V Sindhu entered the quarter-final stage of the German Open on Thursday after winning in straight sets. However, World No. 10 Srikanth and Kashyap crashed out of the tournament in the pre-quarters leaving Sindhu as the lone Indian representative left in the tournament.
After easing past American shuttler Rong Schaffer in the opening round yesterday, seventh seed P V Sindhu continued her good run in the tournament by defeating Canadian shuttler Michele Li 21-9, 21-17 to enter the quarter-final. Sindhu will have a tough fight on her hands in the quarter-final today with the Indian slated to take on fourth seed Wang Shixian.
However, all the other Indians in the fray including sixth seed Kidambi Srikant crashed out of the tournament on Thursday leaving Sindhu as the lone Indian representative in the tournament.
Twelfth seed Angus Ng Ka Long from Hong Kong created an upset against higher-ranked Kidambi Srikanth in the pre-quarter by claiming an 18-21, 21-18, 21-18 victory in 56 minutes. Although the Indian pocketed the first game 21-18, Angus produced a spirited comeback in the second game to win it by the same score to level things up in the game.
The Guntur lad made a mess of the third game after leading it by 18-11 and allowed Angus to take 10 consecutive points to enter the quarter-final.
Parupalli Kashyap’s hopes of qualifying for the Olympics also suffered another blow after the Hyderabad lad suffered an injury during the pre-quarter match against eighth seed Son Wan-Ho. After losing the first game 12-21, Kashyap limped out midway into the second game with the score at 11-16 after suffering an injury.
In the Men’s Doubles, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy also bowed out of the tournament on Thursday after losing to the Chinese Taipei pair of Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin 10-21,10-21.
