The Olympic medal and the World Championship medals came before, but PV Sindhu has finally lifted her maiden Superseries title today at the China Open. The Indian defeated Sun Yu of China in a thrilling three-setter by a scoreline of 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 in the final today.

PV Sindhu had achieved milestones well ahead of time when she won the World Championship medal when she was still 17. The Indian then won the Olympic medal at 21, but she has had to wait so long for a maiden Superseries title. That finally happened today at the China Open.

The Indian had a 2-3 head-to-head against China's Sun Yu going into the match. She had earlier edged out Korea's Sung ji Hyun yesterday after saving three match points to win the semifinal.

In the first set, Sindhu went ahead with a rush to take a 4-1 lead and soon reached the break with an 11-5 margin thanks to a lovely down the line smash. As Sindhu stepped up her play, Sun capitulated to commit a series of errors giving Sindhu a huge lead at 19-8. The Indian soon closed out the set at 21-11.

Sindhu started the second once again on top with a 6-4 lead, but Sun pulled back to draw par at 7-7. Sindhu led 13-9 at one point, but the Chinese World No.8, egged on by local supporters, took six straight points to take the lead at 14-16. Sun rode the shift in the momentum and quickly reached 20-16 to take four set points. Although Sindhu saved one, Sun took the second set to force a third.

In the third, the two were locked together until 6-6, but Sindhu took four straight points to reach 10-6. Sindhu went into the break with a small lead at 11-8, but came out charging to wrap the match up in double time at 21-11. The Indian completed it by letting out a huge roar and rushed to hug her coach.

With the win, the Indian has finally broken her jinx at finals and won her maiden Superseries title.
