Denmark Open: Parupalli Kashyap goes down fighting
Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap went down fighting 13-21, 21-8, 20-22 to Raul Must in the opening round of the Qualifiers at the Denmark Open on Tuesday, the first Superseries event after the Rio Games. Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu will open her campaign in the qualifying on Wednesday.
It was Kashyap’s second defeat to Must in a week after being ousted by the Estonian at the Dutch Open. In a match that lasted 59 minutes, Kashyap fought till the very end but was unlucky to lose the decider 20-22.
Kashyap led 9-7 in the opening game, but Raul went on a seven-point surge to wrest the initiative from the Indian, winning it 21-13. Kashyap staged a strong comeback in the second, winning 21-8 in a dominant show.
Kashyap fought back remarkably from 8-16 in the decider to level at 19 and even lead 20-19. However, it just was not his day, as Must powered ahead to clinch the contest.
The mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy, lost 15-21, 14-21 to fifth-seeded Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen in what turned out to be a disappointing day for India.
On Wednesday, Sindhu will face China's He Bingjiao in her first outing after Rio.
