Subhankar Dey capped off a brilliant week by bagging the 2018 SaarLorLux title after he comfortably outplayed British fifth seed, Rajiv Ouseph, in straight sets on Sunday night. Dey secured the title by a scoreline of 21-11, 21-14 in a match that lasted just 33 minutes in Saarbrucken.

Indian shuttler, Subhankar Dey, has been in top-form all week as he displayed his talent all throughout the recently concluded SaarLorLux Open in Saarbrucken, Germany. The Indian registered comfortable wins against the likes of the legendary Lin Dan and Toby Penty en route to the final.

He capped off a beautiful week by defeating British fifth seed, Rajiv Ouseph, in the final of the competition on Sunday night to lift the 2018 SaarLorLux Open title. Dey made his way to a brilliant straight-game victory by a scoreline of 21-11, 21-14 in a match that lasted for just 33 minutes.

Dey was barely troubled in the opening game as he didn’t lose the lead, right from the start till the end. After he raced off to a  7-1 lead, Dey wrapped up the opener in no time. However, the second game was a bit tighter when former European champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ouseph levelled things up a couple of times at 4-4 and 7-7. But the young Indian ace eventually went on to win five straight points from 16-14 to wrap up the match.

“It’s been amazing, I can’t believe it’s real. It’s my biggest achievement in life, actually. Expected to work really hard in long rallies in the final but it turned out to be short. I am playing really well right now. I did a lot of homework and it paid off. I watched his games. I was patient and knew I had nothing to lose.”

The highlight of Dey’s tournament had to be his semifinal encounter against China’s Ren Pegbo. The world number 64 Indian knocked out Ren by a nerve-racking scoreline of 21-18, 11-21, 24-22 in a match that went on for more than an hour.
