Reports | India’s doubles badminton coach Tan Kim Her resigns

With an aim of a doubles medal at the Olympics, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) had attempted the Malaysian coach back in 2015 and his tenure was till the end of the next Olympics. However, the Indian doubles contingent has received a big setback with his decision of stepping down from the coach’s position.

Meanwhile, Scroll sources in BAI have informed that the coach stepped down from the position that he held in Indian badminton because of a better offer from another country and decided to move ahead. There are reports that he also wanted an extension till the 2024 Olympics which was not guaranteed in India. 

Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s excellent run at the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast was one of his achievements in Kim Her’s tenure as their coach. The duo had finished CWG 2018 with a silver medal and is currently placed at No. 20 in the world. Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy also won a bronze medal for India in the women’s doubles at the Games in Australia last year.

Singles coach Mulyo Handoyo from Indonesia had also left BAI in 2018 citing personal reasons. The Indian shuttlers and the association is still waiting for Korean coaches Kim Ji Hyun and Park Tae Sang to join the Indian unit. Two Indonesian coaches Flandy Limpele and Namrih Suroto were appointed by the BAI even before Kim Her’s resignation.

Chief national coach Pullela Gopichand has confirmed to the media house about Kim Her’s resignation but didn’t make any comment about the reason behind the decision by the 47-year-old Malaysian.
