Women's World Boxing Championship: Sonia Lather, Seema Poonia and Sarjubala reach quarters

Feather weight boxer Sonia Lather defeated Nomin Deutsch 3-0 in the 2nd round of the championship in Astana on Monday to progress to the last eight. Seema Poonia and Sarjubala Shamjetsabam followed suit as well, winning their matches against Aynur Rzayeva and Erandi Kaluhath respectively.

Sonia Lather was unanimously judged the winner at 40-36 by all the three judges in the women's feather weight (57 kg) category. She will now face Polish pugilist Aneta Rygielska in the next round later today.

Sarjubala Shamjetsabam also won her match in the afternoon session. She defeated Erandi Kaluhath 3-0 in the women's light fly weight (45-48 kg) category. She will take on Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinal. Seema Poonia continued India's winning run by convincingly defeating Aynur Rzayeva 3-0 in her bout in women's heavy weight (+81 kg) category.

However, the night ended badly for India as Pooja Rani was knocked out by Savannah Marshall in the women's middle weight (75 kg) category. The Indian lost 3-0 in a one-sided bout. Pavitra also lost 0-3 in the light welter weight (64 kg) category match-up against Skye Nicolson of Australia.
