Defending champion Nitu from India clinched gold at the world youth boxing championships in Budapest on Thursday. 48-year-old Nitu claimed her second consecutive title in the championship by putting up a strong show in the final against Nillada Meekoon from Thailand.

The Haryana-born boxer defeated the Thai in a split decision on Day 1 of the summit clashes in Budapest. The Asian champion remained calm and composed till the end and came up with straight blows and drew verdict in her favour in the end. Earlier, Meekoon made the bout slightly messy with her defensive tactics that involved a lot of holding.

Nitu had won gold medal last year in the world championships when it was held in Guwahati.

On the first day of the finals, Nitu was the only Indian participating while Manisha (64kg), Anamika (51kg) and Sakshi (57kg) will be in action today.

Manisha will battle it out against England’s Gemma Paige Richardson, while Anamika will take on Destiny Garcia of the USA.  Sakshi will meet Croatia’s Nikolina Cacic in her final bout.

Earlier in the championships, Indian boxers Jony (60kg), Astha Pahwa (75kg), Bhavesh Kattimani (52kg), Ankit Khatana (60kg), Neha Yadav (+81kg) and Sakshi Gaidhani (81kg) settled for bronze medals after losing their respective semifinals.
