Pugilists Vikas Krishan and Amit Phanghal clinched gold medals in the 69th Strandja Memorial boxing tournament as Mary Kom ended up winning a silver in the tournament on Sunday. India managed a total of 11 medals in all the categories including two golds, three silvers, and six bronze medals.

Amit (49kg) faced Morocco's Said Mordaji in the clash for a gold medal. The 23-year-old Haryana player started slowly against a taller opponent but Mordaji failed to match the accuracy of the Indian.

Vikas, who participated in the event after recovering from a hand injury, showed improved stamina and quick foot movement against American opponent Troy Isley in the 75kg category. It was an easy clash for the Indian who approached quite aggressively in the initial stage and played smartly in the last three minutes of the bout.

Mary Kom (48kg), who was looking for her third consecutive gold after the Asian Championships and the India Open, settled for a silver as she lost to Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova in a controversial game. The result was not only shocking for the fans but for Mary Kom as well, who showed her dominance during the bout against the local player.

In the other matches in men’s category, Gaurav Solanki (52kg) lost a close fight against Ukraine's Dmytro Zamotaev and ended the campaign with a silver. Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg), who had won a silver medal in the last edition, and former Asian Games bronze winner Satish Kumar (+91kg), also ended their run with bronze.

Seema Poonia (+81kg), who faced Russia's Anna Ivanova, also settled for silver as she failed to answer her rival’s sheer power and quick hittings. Meena Kumari Devi (54kg), L Sarita Devi (60kg), Saweety Boora (75kg), and Bhagyabati Kachari (81kg) were the other Indian women who returned with a bronze medal.
