India’s MC Mary Kom has bagged the gold medal at the ongoing AIBS World Women’s Boxing Championships in New Delhi. The Indian boxer defeated Ukraine’s H Okhota in the final of the light fly category with a unanimous 5-0 decision in her favour in the summit clash played on Saturday.

Mary Kom managed to win her sixth world title after getting the better of Hanna Okhota from Ukraine in the final bout this afternoon. The 35-year-old started on a dominating note from the very first round of the bout as she landed two right jabs on her opponent. In the 48 kg category finals, she carried on with the aggressive intent throughout the bout apart from the second round which was a closely contested one.

"I want to thank the fans who turned up today to cheer me and the Indian contingent. They have been supporting me for last many years," Mary Kom expressed after the final bout.

The Indian pugilist has now overtaken the record of Ireland’s Katie Taylor who had won five world titles earlier and is the most successful woman boxer in the history. She had earlier won gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions of the world event and apart from that she also clinched a silver in her debut year.

Mary Kom had defeated North Korea's Kim Hyang Mi in a unanimous decision to reach the 48kg final.
