Asian Boxing Championships | Shiva Thapa starts his campaign with a win, six Indians enter quarters

Indian pugilist Shiva Thapa has started on a winning note at the ongoing Asian Boxing Championships as he has qualified for the pre-quarterfinals in the 60kg category. Six other boxers from India have also made it to the quarter-finals of the prestigious event being held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Thapa registered a thrilling victory in the first round of the 60kg weight category against Kim Wonho of Korea by 4-1 verdict and has now entered the pre-quarterfinals. The Indian boxer will now meet Kyrgyzstan's Seitbek Uulu. 

Bronze medal winner from last World Championships Lovlina Borgohain has also made a winning start to her campaign at the continental event as she defeated Vietnam's Tran Thi Linh 5-0 to enter into the top eight of the 69kg category. She will take on Chen Nien-Chin from Chinese Taipei in her next bout. Another Indian boxer Deepak won his bout in a comprehensive manner with a 5-0 verdict to beat Mutunaka Pedi Gedara from Sri Lanka in 49kg and entered the quarter-finals.

Rohit Tokas (64kg) has also qualified for the quarter-finals as he thrashed Afghanistan's Nooristani Mohammad Khaibar 5-0. In the 56kg category, Kavinder Singh Bisht, who had earlier won a gold at the GeeBee Boxing Tournament, also made a winning start with a 5-0 win against Japan's Subaru Murata.

Ashish Kumar won his pre-quarterfinal bout in the 75kg category against China's Tanglatihan Tuohetaerbieke while Manisha Moun (54kg) defeated Vietnam's Do Nha Uyen with a unanimous 5-0 win.

India’s only defeat at the Championships yesterday came in the women’s 48kg weight category in which debutant Nitu was defeated by Taipei's Pin Meng-Chieh.
