Vijender Singh to face off against Mike Snider in US professional debut
Vijender Singh is in line to make his US professional circuit debut on July 13 against local boxer Mike Snider in Newark, New Jersey. The 33-year-old Indian was originally scheduled to have his first fight on American soil in April but an injury suffered during a sparring session delayed it.
India’s first-ever Olympic medalist in boxing Vijender Singh bid adieu to his amateur career by turning professional as he signed a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment back in 2015. However, in 2018 Singh signed a multiyear promotional contract with America-based Top Rank after he struggled to find a title fight for almost a year.
The Indian boxing star was slated to make his US professional circuit earlier this year in April in Los Angeles but an injury suffered during a sparring session delayed it. However, Singh is now in line to make his debut on the US professional circuit on July 13 against local favourite Mike Snider in Newark, New Jersey.
During his injury break, Vijender returned to India and contested the Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket.
Snider last competed in February against Tommy Hughes in Chicago and lost via TKO in round five. Meanwhile, Singh has not competed for more than a year after having last fought against Ghana’s Ernest Amuzu in Jaipur in 2017, winning the bout via a unanimous decision.
