The only Indian in the final of the Women’s World Boxing Championships Manju Rani was beaten in the final and had to settle for a silver medal. Rani lost the light flyweight (48kg) final against Russia’s Ekaterina Paltceva on Monday by a split verdict of 1-4 at Ulan-Ude in Russia.

In the first final of the last day at the Women’s World Boxing Championships, it was disappointing for the Indian sports lovers as the only Indian Manju Rani settled for a silver after a loss against Russian pugilist Ekaterina Paltceva with the 1-4 verdict going in the Russian’s favour. It was her debut world event and Manju had a great campaign till the last day.

Although the sixth-seeded Indian had a decent time inside the ring in the first round and second round, sharper reflexes in the last few minutes of the bout might have helped the local favourite to win the title. Pretty much like Mary Kom’s loss, the Indian contingent looked disappointed after the referee declared the Russian as the winner.

Rani, who won the National title for Punjab earlier this year, was the only Indian playing on the last day of the Championship. All other Indians who made it to the semis - MC Mary Kom (51kg), Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) – all lost their respective semi-final bouts and had to settle for bronze medals.
