Six Nations Hockey | India suffer heavy defeat to Germany

India came into the tournament on the back of a historic second place finish in the Champions Trophy in London. It was India's best finish in the tournament, bettering their bronze from 1982. India had gone down 1-3 in the penalty shootout against World Champions Australia in the final to settle for silver, after a gutsy display in normal time.

In the first match of the Six Nations tournament, India took on Olympic champions Germany, against whom they had squandered a 3-1 lead in the group stages of the Champions Trophy to draw 3-3 at the end. Roelant Oltmans' side would have hoped for a better performance, this time around, but Mats Grambusch struck an early blow when he found the back of the net in the 5th minute. India conceded two more in the first quarter, Grambusch slotting in one more in the 10th minute and Moritz Furste making no mistake from a 14th-minute penalty corner. 

Germany struck again from another penalty corner in the 57th minute through Lukas Windfeder to finish the game on a high.

India will take on Ireland tomorrow in their second match of the tournament. Also part of the tournament are hosts Spain, Argentina, and New Zealand.
