Dipa Karmakar’s Coach : After returning to the Games Village, she was inconsolable
Dipa Karmakar could not hide her disappointment, despite being hailed as a national hero, after finishing fourth in the Women’s Vault finals. Her coach also said that 23-year old wept inconsolably after they reached the Olympic village.
Dipa Karmakar’s journey from Tripura to the finals of artistic gymnastics in Rio 2016 might have inspired many on the eve of India’s 70th Independence Day, but she was inconsolable after missing out on a medal by a margin of 0.15 according to her coach, Bishweshwar Nandi.
"After she returned to the Games Village, Dipa was inconsolable. Missing the bronze by so less a margin will remain the biggest regret for us," the coach told PTI. Despite receiving overwhelming response for her efforts to reach the finals and finishing fourth in the event, her coach expressed that August 15,2016 will remain their worst Independence Day of their lives. “Yes everyone was happy but to us we lost a world, and by the narrowest of margins. It's the worst Independence Day that we could have had. I'm the saddest coach of earth. This regret will be hard to forget,” he said.
Speaking about Dipa’s chances at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Nandi said, “We just need to stay fit and have proper facilities to keep herself in proper shape for Tokyo 2020. The biggest challenge would be to not lose focus and maintain the same intensity over the period of four years.”
