Ahead of the Paralympics event about to start on September 7, Indian Sports Ministry has promised cash prizes for athletes who will be returning back with medals from Rio. Much like the Summer Olympics at Rio, India is sending its largest Paralympic contingent consisting of 17 athletes.

The Sports Ministry on Tuesday announced that Rio Paralympic medallists would receive cash prizes.“The cash award is at par with medallists of Olympics,” it said.

“Gold medallists of #Paralympic Games are entitled to Rs. 75 Lacs, Silver Rs. 50 Lacs & Bronze Rs. 30 Lacs as cash award from MYAS (sic),” the Ministry tweeted from its official handle.

17 athletes, including 15 men and two women will be taking part in the event as India send its largest-ever contingent to the Paralympics. In 2012, India had sent only 10 athletes and had won a silver when Girisha Nagarajegowda placed second in the Men's High Jump F42 event.
