Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has called for a complete overhaul of the current sporting system of the country that would see developed playing arenas and improved coaches. He also highlighted how Prime Minister’s ‘Khelo India’ programme will change the sporting scenario in India.

Rathore, who is the first athlete to become the Sports Minister of the country, is eyeing to revamp the existing sporting system of the country and has called for a different mindset while introducing the latest developments.

During the inauguration of the 'National Workshop on Sports for All' in New Delhi, Rathore stated, “We need to change our thought process. We need to build more playing arenas at low cost. In India when someone decides to build any stadium he thinks of an Olympic like stadium."

"The ministry is working on a coaching programme. Our coaches need to upgrade their knowledge from time to time. From now on, we will be assessing the coaches every year… We are creating an IT-based structure where ‘Khelo India’ programme and TOPS will be monitored 24x7 and 365 days. The performances of High-Performance Managers and coaches will also be monitored."

While speaking about the Prime Minister’s new ‘Khelo India’ initiative, the Sports Minister issued a strict warning to the National Sports Federations (NSFs) stating that any kind of misgovernance would not be tolerated anymore.

"It is our Prime Minister's vision to promote sporting culture in the country. So, there would be zero tolerance in terms of misgovernance in sports. The federations will have to think beyond their turfs. There would be a massive amount of transparency in terms of team selection, results. Everything has to be open and sharing," said Rathore.

The 47-year-old, who got worldwide acclaim for winning the silver medal in the double trap event at the 2004 Athens Olympics, will be in charge of the policy-making decisions while leaving the execution to experts.

“Ministry will make policies and the operational responsibility will lie with professionals. We are in the process of CEOs to look after all the programmes," he added.
