Former Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra has been appointed as a member of the prestigious Athletes’ Commission of the International Olympic Committee. He has become only the second Indian sportsperson, after the Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal, to be appointed to the IOC’s Athletes’ Commission.

The 35-year-old, now retired, became the first Indian to win an individual gold medal in the Olympic Games after he won the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Games. In 2014, he was elected chairman of the International Shooting Sport Federation’s Athletes Committee. He even came close to winning a second Olympic medal at the Rio Games in 2016.

Bindra expressed his happiness on Twitter after being appointed as a member. He stated that he is privileged to be a part of the IOC and is looking forward to work hard for the athletes. The tweet included his appointment letter from the IOC President Thomas Bach which stated the reason behind his inclusion.

Bach further stated that due to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in October, the Commissions’ meeting for 2018 will exceptionally take place in January 2019. The President concluded by thanking Bindra in advance and stated that he is looking forward to work with him (Bindra).
