IOA declares no accreditation will be provided to parents in Asian Games
After the pull-out threat given by Saina Nehwal, IOA made it clear that no accreditation would be provided to parents in the upcoming Asian Games. IOA has accepted that the accreditation given during the CWG was an exception as the concerned player refused to participate unless it was not provided.
After an angry Twitter rant by ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal, the Indian Olympic Association added her father's name to the Indian team's official list to travel to Gold Coast. Nehwal had previously stated that she wouldn’t play her matches if her father was not with her. However, after the incident, the IOA made the 'no accreditation policy’ rather firm this time for the Asian Games.
“There is no policy to give accreditation to parents of the players. We made an exception in Gold Coast as the athlete in question ( without taking Saina's name) said she wont play,” secretary general of IOA, Rajeev Mehta said.
“We have her parent a 'P’ type accreditation as there were officials who were not travelling, which allowed us to make an exception. But no parents of athletes will get an accreditation from IOA for Asian Games,” Mehta further added.
However, if the NSFs decide to make any relatives supporting staff, IOA will lose the authority of raising any objection.
“The convention is 25% of the squad will have officials/support staff. For example, if any particular squad compromise 12 members, then there will be officials (coach manager). Now if an NSF inducts any parent/spouse/relative as officials, then we can't object,” Rajeev Mehta clarified.
