Three more medals into India’s kitty at Commonwealth TT Championships
After the Indian men's team ended an 11-year medal drought with a glorious gold, the Indian doubles pairs have continued the momentum by ensuring three more medals - two probable gold or silver medals at the 20th Commonwealth table tennis championships.
Soumyajit Ghosh and Mouma Das, who were the silver medallists in the previous edition, will take on the top seeded pair of Li Hu and Zhou Yihan of Singapore in the semi-final.
Soumyajit and Mouma started their quarter-final match on the back foot against Singapore’s Chen Feng and Yee Herng as they made quite a few unforced errors to make an easy outing look like a tight contest. They, however, managed to hang on to win the opening game 13-11. They seemed set in the second game as they lost just a point to wrap the game 11-1. In the third game, the Indian duo had some resistance from the Singaporeans but finally won the game and match eventually with an 11-6 victory in the third.
In the other semi-final, two Indian pairs will battle it out for a place in the final with Sanil Shetty and Manika Batra facing off against G. Sathiyan and Ankita Das.
Sathiyan and Ankita defeated the Singaporean pair of Chew Zhe Yu Clarence and Lin Ye in four games to book their place in the last four.
Sathiyan and Ankita managed to take an early lead of 1-0 in the match by winning the first game 11-4, but faltered in the second as they lost it 9-11. They made a good come-back as they erased all hopes for the Singaporeans by thrashing them 11-2 in the third before wrapping up the match with an 11-5 win in the fourth set to make it an all-Indian contest in the second semi-final.
Meanwhile, all the Indian singles players sailed through into the main draw with convincing victories. Sanil Shetty, Sudhanshu Grover, Devesh Karia and Abhishek Yadav qualified in the men’s section and Pooja Sahasrabudhe, Divya Deshpande, Madhurika Patkar and Krittwika Sinha Roy reached the next stage in the women’s draw.
