Table Tennis World Championships | Indian challenge ends as G Sathiyan loses in round of 32
India’s challenge at the ongoing Table Tennis World Championships came to an end as G Sathiyan lost his round of 32 match in the men’s singles category. Earlier in the tournament, Manika Batra and Achanta Sharath Kamal had lost their previous round battles to get knocked out of the Championships.
After the exit of Batra and Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan was the only Indian in contention in the men’s singles category at the ongoing World Championships. The Indian paddler, however, lost 6-11, 3-11, 9-11, 9-11 to Brazil’s Hugo Calderano in the pre-quarterfinal round of the tournament.
The Brazilian, ranked seventh in the world, won the round of 32 match in less than 30 minutes. Ranked 28 in the world, Sathiyan performed well in the third and fourth games and had also taken a lead at 8-5 before a stunning comeback by the Brazilian. Earlier in the tournament, Sathiyan had registered an easy win against Cristian Pletea of Romania by 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6 points.
With the result going against Sathiyan, the Indian challenge finally came to an end at the ITTF World Championships in Budapest. Not a single Indian paddler managed to get a qualification into the pre-quarters of the prestigious event this time around. Sathiyan, after finishing sixth in the Asian Cup held at Yokohama recently, had managed to qualify for the Chengdu World Cup.
