G Sathiyan becomes top-ranked Indian table tennis player of all time

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran jumped three places to 28 to create history and become the highest-ranked Indian men’s table tennis player of all time. Meanwhile, 2018 Gold Coast and Asian Games medalist, Manika Batra, became the first Indian woman to break into the top-50 in the rankings.

Indian table tennis player, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, has created history as he achieved a career best ranking of 28 in the recently updated table tennis rankings list. The Indian star jumped three places from 31 to become the highest ranked Indian male player of all time. Sathiyan was five spots ahead of senior countryman, Sharath Kamal who dropped from 30 to 33 in the latest update of the International Table Tennis Federation world ranking for men Kamal held the previous record when he was ranked 30th.

Sathiyan had lost to the legendary Kamal in the national table tennis championship men’s singles final but has impressed over the last year, having also won the Asian Games gold medal in August.

Meanwhile, amongst the women, Indian youngster Manika Batra became the first Indian woman to break into the top-50 rankings of the International Table Tennis Federation.  Batra lost in the semi-finals of the National Championship to fellow youngster Archana Kamath. However, she enjoyed a good run on the international circuit over the last few months which saw her ranking rise from 57 August 2018 to number 47 now.
