Asian Table tennis Championships | Indian men’s team beats Hong Kong 3-0 to secure fifth position
India’s men’s team put up a dominating show against Hong Kong by defeating them 3-0 to earn a 5th placed finish at the 2019 Asian Table-tennis Championships on Wednesday. Earlier on Tuesday, India had already earned a quarter-final spot in Champions Division as the top-six finishers.
Indian men’s table tennis team defeated Hong Kong 3-0 to secure the 5th position at the 2019 Asian Tabletennis Championships on Wednesday in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. India’s top trio, comprising of Achanta Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Anthony Amalraj dominated the show against the opponents as they picked up 3-2, 3-1, 3-1 wins, respectively.
Sharath Kamal, who had a dismal reverse singles match against the Japanese in the quarter-finals losing 7-11, 0-11, 0-11, opened up India’s account with a 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7 win over Lam Siu Hang avoiding a scare after being down two sets to one. Later, Anthony Amalraj sealed a 9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 victory against Ng Pak Ham before Sathiyan Gnanasekaran defeated Kwan Man Ho 11-5, 11-13, 11-7,14-12 to ensure a comfortable victory for the Indians.
Earlier on Tuesday, the men’s team beat Singapore 3-0 in the 5-8 classification match in the Championships to remain in the champions division of the continental event. India lost to Japan 1-3 in the quarterfinals but ensured that they will finish in the top six of the tournament with their win over Singapore.
India will thus gain direct entry into the next championships in 2021, while the Indian women’s team were placed ninth after beating Malaysia 3-0.
