Federer calls for radical change to decider set at Wimbledon

Swiss maestro Roger Federer has suggested a tie-break at 12-12 in the deciding sets of Wimbledon matches to prevent matches from turning into marathons. Though he enjoyed watching such matches, it is tasking for the players to perform well in the following rounds, the seven-time champion said.

John Isner and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played out an epic four-hour-24-minute battle on Sunday with the final score reading 6-7 (3-7) 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 19-17 in favour of Tsonga. Speaking on this, Federer said that a tie-breaker could be a good idea in the fifth set.

"I don't know. Maybe they could make a tie-break at 12-all. Yeah, it is rough for not only the players playing, but also the players that follow that court.

"I think it's super cool, and that's the match I was watching: Isner v Tsonga. I didn't care about any other match that was being played other than that match. It is very cool if it goes 12-all, 14-all, 18-all, 20-all, further and further. But the chances get slimmer and slimmer to win that next round. Like the Open, they have a breaker in the fifth,” Independent reported him as saying. Also read- Roger Federer endorses ban on Maria Sharapova

Federer himself was involved in the third-longest singles final by time played, in the 2008 Wimbledon final against Rafael Nadal. He lost 4-6,4-6,7-6, 7-6, 7-9 in a match dubbed as “one of the greatest-ever”.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion suggested that a tie-breaker could be introduced at 12-all.

"They can make a compromise and make a tie-breaker at 12-all. Play another six service games each. Usually it doesn't go to that, anyway, to 12-all. If it does go there, you had your chances to break or not to break, so you're happy maybe to be in a tie-breaker," reported Independent.

Federer reached the quarterfinal of the 2016 Wimbledon on Monday after dismantling Steve Johnson 6-2,6-3,7-5. He will next face Marin Cilic for a spot in the last-four.
