US Open singles champion to earn record $3.5 million

The record prize money given at this year’s final Grand Slam are the largest in the tournament’s history. Compared to other Grand Slams, US Open offers significantly higher prize money to the players. Andy Murray and Serena Williams, the winners of the men’s and women’s singles event at the recently concluded Wimbledon, earned 2 million pounds (about $2.6 million). The overall prize money at the Wimbledon was about $37.2 million, while the French Open and the Australian Open offered about $35.4 million and $33.6 million respectively.

Apart from the $3.5 million earned by the men’s and women’s singles winners, the runners-up in these events will earn $1.75 million, while the doubles champions will split $625,000.

The increase in prize money this year keeps the USTA on course in fulfilling their promise to the players that they would create a $50 million prize pool by 2017. Back in 2013, the players had complained about the grueling schedule of the US Open as well as the unsatisfactory prize money, which had prompted the body to commit to the 2017 plan.

This year’s US Open will start on August 29 at the Flushing Meadows.
