Despite a slump in form, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have retained their joint World No. 1 position in women's doubles. Although the pair's incredible winning streak ended just short of Jana Novotna's 44-match record, that has been enough to put them miles ahead of the lower-ranked players.

Both Hingis and Sania sit comfortably atop the WTA rankings with 12,045 points each. Third-placed Bethanie Mattek of United States is far behind with almost half the points the duo hold at 6,645.

Mirza and Hingis have been scintillating since joining hands back in 2015. The pair have won three Grand slams since, and were on an unbelievable winning streak that ended in February when the duo crashed out of the Dubai Open. They had clinched 41 runs by then, just 3 short of Jana Novotna's record.

The pair have hit a bad patch of sorts by their standards since, losing at the Miami Open and Indian Wells. Although they regained their touch with deep runs at the Stuttgart and Madrid, they suffered heartbreaks at the final hurdle in both the events with their second loss coming last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams holds a similar grip on the crown atop the women's singles rankings with a score almost 2,500 points ahead of her closest rival Angelique Kerber at 8,235.
