I can't be World No.1, says US Open winner Stan Wawrinka
When asked about his chances of making it into the elite group of “Big Four” following his 3rd Grand Slam win, Stan Wawrinka told that he is happy with his current US Open trophy. Earlier, he also made it clear that he had no issues with Novak Djokovic asking for medical treatment during the final.
“Can you be Number 1?” Charlie Rose asked US Open champion Stan Wawrinka during a sit-down interview on Monday.
“No,” laughed the 31-year old. “I won three Grand Slams, but I’m not consistent enough during the year. If you look, Novak is making a final or winning every tournament that he’s playing. I can play amazing, I can win a Grand Slam, but I’m not playing well enough in the year.”
When confronted with the question whether he is the best in the world when it comes to Grand Slam Finals, Wawrinka replied with a smile, “I am happy with the trophy. It is something amazing for me. I am going to try to win as much as I can-- matches and tournaments. We will see when I stop playing.”
When asked whether he is the eyeing the upcoming Wimbledon title next, Wawrinka said that the tournament will be different now that he has won three Gland Slams.
“For sure it(Wimbledon) will be different, now that I have three Grand slams. But I have been trying to improve on grass every year.”
When asked whether fellow countryman Swiss legend Roger Federer was his hero taking up the sport, Wawrinka had a straight-forward reply.
“Oh yes, of course! He is a hero to lot of people. We are very close. We have won the Davis Cup doubles, then we won the Olympics gold medal in doubles. We share many good memories together,” Wawrinka said.
Looking forward into the future, Stan said, “I keep working out every day with my coach. Tennis-wise there are many things I can improve, but right now I have won the Grand Slam, so I need to enjoy a little bit too and keep going.”
It was reported that Wawrinka was furious about Novak Djokovic calling for medical help during the US Open Final, but the Swiss cleared the air on Tuesday saying that he didn't exactly know what happened at the other end and that he had no problems with the Serb.
"I don’t know exactly what happened, but the second they told me—because normally you have only one [session per injury]—it was because he was bleeding,” Wawrinka said. “For me, it’s normal the guy is bleeding, and you have to do something. I have no problem with that," he told a small bunch of reporters, reported tennis.com.
