The Indo-Chinese doubles pairing of Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Cincinnati Open with a 6-3, 6-7,10-3 win over the Romanian pair of Irina-Camelia Begu and Raluca Olaru. Meanwhile, Johanna Konta set up a rematch with Simona Halep.

The fourth seeded pair of Mirza and Shuai kept their winning run going at the Cincinnati Open as they saw off the Romanian pair of Begu and Olaru 6-3, 6-7,10-3 to reach the semi-finals of the tournament. The quarter final victory was far from the comfortable 7-5, 6-4 win that the duo had experienced against German-Ukrainian pair of Julia Goerges and Olga Savchuk in the second round.

In the women's singles section, Britain’s Johanna Konta will face off against Simona Halep once again, this time in the quarter-finals of the ongoing tournament. While the seventh seed defeated Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-3 6-4 to reach the last eight for the first time, Romanian second seed Halep beat Latvian Anastasija Sevastova 6-4 6-3.

The last time these two met in the Wimbledon quarter finals, BBC television had notched up a record 7.4 million audience views, one million more than the men’s final. Following Konta’s ugly experience in the Fed Cup clash against Halep that took place back in April, where the Brit was reduced to tears on the court by the threats and intimidation she faced from the Romanian fans in the audience, their rivalry has heated up. And Halep will be looking to exact revenge after the Brit knocked her out of Wimbledon.

Finally, Australian qualifier Ashleigh Barty couldn’t continue her dream run as she was ousted 4-6, 2-6 by sixth-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki. Barty had emerged victorious quite surprisingly against Venus Williams in the last round when the 21-year-old rallied to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win.
