Veteran tennis star Leander Paes has been dropped from India’s Davis Cup squad for the World Group away tie against Serbia scheduled from September 14 to 16. However, the reigning Asian Games champion pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan have been included to play the doubles.

Paes, who had pulled out of the Asian games because of issues related to his doubles partner earlier this month, was dropped from India’s Davis Cup squad. However, selection committee chairman S.P. Mishra though cleared that Paes’ Asiad absence wasn’t taken into consideration while selecting the squad.

On the other hand, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan were included to play the doubles. Country’s no. 1 singles player Yuki Bhambri along with compatriots Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Ramkumar Ramanathan was included on the list to play the singles while Sumit Nagal failed to retain his place.

The members of the selection committee, Mishra (Chairman), Balram Singh, Nandan Bal, Rohit Rajpal, and coach Zeeshan Ali selected the team via teleconference. Mahesh Bhupathi and Ali will be the non-playing captain and coach respectively and the team will be accompanied by two physios as well.
