Logically Novak Djokovic should skip Wimbledon, asserts Mats Wilander

Djokovic has 12 won Grand Slam titles that include 6 Australian Open titles, 3 Wimbledon titles, 2 US Open titles and one on clay. However, since the 2016 French Open, he has been only able to register only four titles in his name, none of which included a Grand Slam.

After being defeated by the Italian Marco Cecchinato 6-3, 7-6(4), 1-6, 7-6(13), Djokovic was clearly distraught. His statement of hesitancy in playing Wimbledon shocked many but Wilander is of the belief that he might not want to play on grass right now. Mats Wilander believes that Djokovic's hesitance to play on grass might serve him well in the long run.

“Even if you play well on grass the bounce is bad, it's hard to find good practice courts, you can't really move properly because you slip and slide and if you are really, really keen to get back to your best, which for him is the hardcourt season, logically you would not want to play on the grass,” Wilander said, reported Reuters.

“He put the fight in and played good for the matches, I think he's on his way. I don't think physically it's ever been a problem, it's mental. And he seemed to have the drive to not want to lose tennis matches,” Wilander said. 

Regarding Djokovic's drop, Wilander finds the 'fine margins’ to be responsible.

“It's a three percent drop. He doesn't have the serve or the Del Potro forehand or the Rafa body language. He needs that edge and has to be 10 0 percent,” he concluded.
