Yuki Bhambri, who was India's sole entrant in singles main draw at Roland Garros, went down in the first round against Ruben Bemelmans while Rohan Bopanna won his first round in the men’s double category. With Bhambri knocked out, India’s singles campaign at the French Open has come to an end.

India’ Rohan Bopanna paired up with Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin and began his Roland Garros campaign in style and registered a win the first round of men’s double category. However, things didn’t turn out quite good for Yuki Bhambri, whose maiden appearance at Roland Garros ended with a straight sets loss in the first round on Tuesday.

Bhambri, who is ranked 93 in the world, lost his opening men's singles match 4-6, 4-6, 1-6 to Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans, who is ranked 110. In their only previous encounter, Bhambri had defeated the Belgian at the ATP Delhi Open semifinals in 2015 but failed to repeat his performance at the French Open. With Bhambri's defeat India's participation in the men's singles came to a premature end.

Earlier, Prajnesh Gunneswaran had made it to the Roland Garros as the lucky loser but he could not compete as he had already confirmed his participation at a Challenger event in Italy after losing his final qualifying round and had left Paris. The player has to be present at the venue to sign in and must have not committed to play in any other event to be eligible for entry into main draw.

Bopanna, who won his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last year in mixed doubles, along with Roger-Vasselin, who is seeded 13th, knocked out the American team of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-1 in just 63 minutes.
